Many pool owners hear about salt systems and ask: does that mean no chlorine? No — a salt system makes its own chlorine from salt dissolved in the water, instead of you adding it by hand.
How a salt system works
Pure salt is dissolved at a very low concentration — far below sea water. As water passes through an electrolysis cell, some of the salt becomes chlorine that sanitises the pool, then reverts to salt in a continuous cycle.
Benefits of salt
- Softer on skin, eyes and hair, without the strong chlorine smell.
- Steady chlorine production that reduces swings and algae growth.
- Lower running costs over time, since you’re not constantly buying chlorine.
Things to consider
Upfront cost is higher because of the generator, and the cell needs periodic cleaning and replacement after several years. Metal fittings and coping should also be salt-resistant.
Can an existing pool be converted?
Yes — in most cases a salt system can be added to an existing pool without structural work, after we check the equipment and surrounding materials.
When we recommend it
We recommend salt for families with children, heavily used pools, and anyone who wants simpler upkeep. For a rarely used pool on a tight budget, traditional chlorine with regular care remains a good option.
